Kansas City will wrap up Earth Week with a community-focused afternoon at Spring Fling, set for Saturday, April 25, 2026, at the Swope Park Bandstand.
The free event will run from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to all ages, giving families, students and local residents a chance to spend part of the weekend outdoors while learning simple ways to support both local parks and the environment.
The event is designed as more than a regular park gathering. Organizers are putting the focus on sustainable practices, with a mix of educational performances, hands-on activities and creative experiences meant to show how everyday choices can have a positive impact.
Instead of turning Earth Week into something that feels overly formal, Spring Fling gives it a more welcoming and practical feel, using crafts, live demonstrations and community participation to make the message easier to connect with.
Visitors will have plenty to do throughout the afternoon. Exhibitors will host crafts and activities for all ages, including a clothing swap, a chance to bring an old T-shirt and turn it into a tote bag, and opportunities to make friendship bracelets from recycled materials.
The setup gives the event a fun, interactive feel while still keeping the focus on reusing materials and thinking differently about waste.

A wide range of local groups and organizations are expected to take part, including Heartland Conservation, KC Parks Community Centers, the KC Office of Environmental Quality, KC Parks Ambassadors, Lakeside Nature Center, Missouri Stream Teams, R_Design, Re.Use.Full, Taffy Studios, The Sewing Labs, and Thrift the Runway.
With that mix of exhibitors, the event should bring together environmental education, local creativity and practical sustainability ideas in one place.
One of the biggest highlights of the day will be the Green Carpet Fashion Show, scheduled for 1 p.m. The show is centered on community makers of all ages and skill levels and shines a light on designs that prioritize sustainability.
Participants are encouraged to create pieces using thrifted clothing, natural dyes or materials that might otherwise be thrown away.
This year’s featured designer is Ryleigh Hightree of R_Design, who is set to present a full collection on the runway, with attendees also able to shop pieces from her work.
The event schedule adds even more variety to the afternoon. At 12 p.m., visitors can catch the Recycle Show by Richard Renner the Vodvill Klown, followed by the Green Carpet Fashion Show at 1 p.m.
Then at 2 p.m., the Animal Ambassadors from Lakeside Nature Center will bring another interactive element to the celebration.
That lineup gives the event a steady flow and makes it easier for families to drop in for a specific activity or stay for the full afternoon.
Set at 4177 Pavilion Road in Kansas City, the Swope Park Bandstand offers a fitting backdrop for an event built around nature, community and creativity.
Spring Fling is also being supported by Evergy and International Architects Atelier, helping bring together local sponsorship with environmental programming in one of the city’s best-known park spaces.
For anyone looking for a local event that feels relaxed, useful and family-friendly, Spring Fling offers a different kind of Earth Week celebration.
It brings together crafts, fashion, nature and community learning in a way that feels approachable while still carrying a clear message about caring for parks, reducing waste and giving old materials new life.
