Kansas City is opening a new round of support for families who need help during pregnancy, childbirth, and the weeks that follow, with the KC Doula Program now offering another round of free doula services for eligible residents in Kansas City, Missouri.
The new funding round was announced Thursday, April 9, 2026, with applications now open and set to remain available as long as funding lasts.
The program is being run through the Kansas City Health Department in partnership with the Community Capital Fund, and city officials say it is meant to improve maternal and infant health outcomes while also supporting local doula businesses.
Families who are currently pregnant or who expect to give birth by August 2026 can apply for scholarships of up to $6,000 to cover doula care at no cost.
That support can go well beyond labor itself. The city says scholarship funding may cover prenatal visits, labor support, advocacy, comfort measures, postpartum care, newborn support, lactation guidance, emotional care for parents, overnight help, bereavement support, fertility and conception guidance, and adoption or surrogacy support.
In other words, this is not just a limited childbirth benefit. It is a broader care program built around families who may need extra support before and after birth.
City leaders are also framing the program as a response to long-standing gaps in care. Dr. Marvia Jones, director of the Kansas City Health Department, said,
“Every family in Kansas City deserves the chance to experience a safe, supported, and empowered birth.”
She added that expanding access to doula care helps remove financial barriers that have historically kept many families, especially those most affected by maternal health disparities, from getting the kind of hands-on, culturally responsive support they need.

Families must live within Kansas City, Missouri city limits to qualify, and the city says applicants should first identify a certified doula of their choice before applying.
Priority is being given to households at or below the Kansas City median income, which makes the program especially important for families who may not otherwise be able to afford this level of care.
The city says award notifications will be sent within two weeks of the application date.
Kansas City is also trying to make the process easier for people who are not sure where to begin.
The Health Department is hosting It’s a Date!: Doula Meet & Greet on Saturday, April 18, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kansas City Health Department, 2400 Troost Ave.
The event is designed to give families a chance to meet local doulas, ask questions, compare care styles, and see who they connect with in a no-pressure setting.
For Kansas City families, the new round of funding opens another path to care that is often talked about but not always financially within reach.
By tying direct scholarship money to local doula support, the city is making a push that goes beyond awareness and into something more practical: helping families actually access the care they may need during one of the most important periods of their lives.
